Groove metal is a Thrash Metal-influenced subgenre of Metal that dates back to the early 1990s. The music itself is generally comprised of mid-tempo guitar riffs similar to those found in thrash metal, but with down-tuned guitars and a tendency to focus more on syncopated rhythms and heaviness instead of speed. Vocals typically consist of screaming or raspy singing. Groove metal began in the early 1990s with albums like Pantera's 1990 album Cowboys From Hell and Prong's Beg to Differ. Pantera's 1992 album Vulgar Display of Power helped bring the band a lot of popularity. Many groove metal bands quickly appeared at the time, including Machine Head, Skinlab and White Zombie. Some thrash metal bands, like Sepultura, Demolition Hammer, Exodus, Exhorder and Anthrax experimented with groove metal during the 1990s. Sepultura, in particular, continued to play groove metal later on. As the 2000s arrived, many other groove metal bands emerged, including Five Finger Death Punch, Lamb of God, and Hellyeah.
