Horrorcore is a style of Hardcore Hip Hop with a lyrical and aesthetic focus on the macabre and morbid, with production generally of a darker nature than is typically found in other Hip Hop. Lyrically, the genre revolves around topics substantially darker than most hardcore hip hop; these topics can range from the supernatural and occult (particularly Satanism), to disturbing and violent scenarios derived from Horror movies, to real-life issues such as murder, suicide, mental illness, and drug abuse, with a more exaggerative, sometimes even parodic tone. Its stylistic origins date back to the early 1990s, with artists such as Geto Boys, Esham, and Brotha Lynch Hung being credited as a few of its pioneers. Three 6 Mafia and Gravediggaz are also noted for their early contributions to the style, and helped draw in more commercial and critical attention to horrorcore. In particular, Three 6 Mafia helped to solidify the genre's presence in the simultaneously rising Memphis Rap scene. Despite its consistently controversial lyrical content, horrorcore has occasionally been brought to the mainstream by artists like Eminem and Insane Clown Posse, the latter spawning the Juggalo subculture. The genre has also influenced various modern artists, including $uicideboy$ and City Morgue.
