Pop punk is a genre that blends the loud, fast-paced sound of Punk Rock with the melodic hooks of Pop. The genre often involves frequent crossover with the wistful, sugary harmonies of Power Pop, and over its long history, it has covered much sonic and lyrical ground. In contrast to other Punk offshoots, much of pop punk tends to focus less on anti-establishment themes and more on personal affairs, with love, teenage angst, and suburban ennui being common topics. The roots of pop punk date back to the emergence of punk rock in the 1970s, when the Ramones combined the pared-back, harder-edged sound of Garage Rock with a melodic sensibility derived from Bubblegum and Girl Groups, along with the early work of The Beatles and The Beach Boys. Other bands from the first wave of punk to embrace a more consciously pop-influenced sound included Buzzcocks and The Undertones, who typically intertwined it with the more guitar-driven side of New Wave.
