Progressive house is a House subgenre that emerged in the UK in the early 1990s. Initially developing alongside and sharing similarities with Trance music, they both evolved into separate, full-fledged genres by the second half of the decade. Progressive house is characterized by slick, delicate production that implements melodic plucks, pads and lush electronic layering with prominent use of reverb and delay, usually without sampling Soul and Funk elements associated with house music. The genre's name refers to its progressions, which consist of gradual incorporations of additional layers of synths and percussion throughout the track. Ultimately, progressive house developed to be a more intricate and melodic subgenre with more electronified, synthetic soundscapes. That being said, certain producers have integrated vocals and live instrumentation, less smooth elements like metallic synths and harder percussion, or minimalistic qualities influenced by Techno and Tech House.
