toner rock is a subgenre of Hard Rock that is characterized by its psychedelic timbres and songwriting as influence from Psychedelic Rock, as well as a bass-heavy sound and slow riffing, typically attributed as influence from Doom Metal and early Heavy Metal like Black Sabbath, and melodic influence from Blues Rock. The production is often raw and loud, and the songwriting often takes significant influence from rougher styles of Alternative Rock whilst combining it with the aforementioned Metal influences. The roots of stoner rock's sound can be traced back to the Heavy Psych of bands like Blue Cheer and Captain Beyond, with some fans of the genre considering them stoner rock after the fact of the genre's inception. Lyrics can vary in stoner rock, but themes like the use of drugs, as well as space, desert-related themes, and mythology are all commonplace in the genre. In the United States, artists like Monster Magnet and Fu Manchu would pioneer stoner rock proper, using down-tuned guitar strings to create heavy riffs and a more overtly Psychedelia-inclined take on the formulas that hard rock bands had been crafting at the time. Kyuss, another early stoner rock pioneer from the Palm Desert Scene, would incorporate these elements with more overt metal influences, in the process pioneering Stoner Metal alongside Sleep. Later into the decade, Kyuss disbanded, and its subsequent members began to make stoner rock of their own accord in their scene, with Josh Homme in particular garnering mainstream attention through Queens of the Stone Age in the late 1990s and 2000s. Stoner rock would see underground success into the 2010s as well, with frequenters in the genre like Elder and Clutch garnering significant acclaim in underground rock circles.
