Trap is an Electronic Dance Music genre broadly characterized by Trap-influenced syncopated percussion with 808 samples and fast-paced hi-hats. Apart from Hip Hop roots, it was influenced by Dubstep, Wonky, Grime and other post-dubstep/UK Bass trends and can be traced to works of Lunice, Sinjin Hawke, Hudson Mohawke and Rustie, similarly to Future Bass, with both genres heavily influencing each other as well. Despite originating around the turn of the decade, the term was established in 2012, which is seen as a breakthrough year for the genre with essential releases such as "Original Don (Flosstradamus Remix)" and TNGHT EP. RL Grime, UZ and Baauer also established themselves as pioneers. Diplo's label Mad Decent and the viral success of "Harlem Shake" contributed to the fast popularization, together with Youtube channels including Trap City, All Trap Music, and Trap Nation. The early, "classic" trap was characterized by a dark and minimalistic atmosphere, focus on sub-bass, many drop sections, flippant vocal samples and Dutch House-influenced synths.
