Plugg is a subgenre of Trap that emerged in the early-to-mid-2010s, pioneered by producer MexikoDro and other members of the BeatPluggz collective; the genre earned its name by after their use of the iconic "Plug!" tag. BeatPluggz and other early plugg producers were influenced by the more minimalistic and rhythmically unique production of trap pioneer Zaytoven. Plugg is primarily characterized by common use of sparse and compact drum and hi-hat patterns, subby 808s, and heavy low-end. The major styles of early plugg centered around piano samples, airy pads, and icy synths, though the genre would greatly diversify. Productions almost exclusively use claps on third beats, while snares are reduced to only being on half beats. Songs are commonly lower-tempo between 130 and 145 BPM, although producers have made tracks outside this tempo range.
