Future bass is a broad subgenre of Electronic Dance Music that emerged in the early to mid-2010s, taking influence from various styles of Wonky, Trap [EDM], some post-Dubstep trends and Purple Sound. Future bass is generally characterized by woozy, detuned synths, which result in a melodic, carefree, and pleasant atmosphere. Other common features include hard, prominent basslines, EDM trap-style drums, 7th and arpeggio chords, high-pitched vocal samples, foley sound effects, and wonky percussion. Future bass evolved from several separate scenes; some of its earliest examples include Hudson Mohawke's 2009 album Butter and Rustie's Sunburst EP, which presented a sonic alternative to the organic, Hip Hop-infused jazzy sound of wonky producers like Flying Lotus and Samiyam. Their sound mixed wonky with Joker's purple sound, and later with trap, which along with songs like "Holdin On" by Flume, created the palette that inspired later future bass producers. Rustie's work also birthed the short-lived trend of Aquacrunk, a style of wonky that also went on to influence future bass. Later producers would take influence from dubstep, trap and other EDM styles, as well as the early 2010s Chillwave and Cloud Rap scenes and the melodic, light style of trap known as "lovetrap". In 2014 the term "future bass" became popular thanks to labels such as Monstercat, which spread the use of the term and promoted the genre. This popularity brought producers such as Lido, KRANE and Sam Gellaitry to the genre. This new wave of future bass producers introduced further experimentation as well as influences from more genres, including but not limited to Electropop, Contemporary R&B, Jersey Club, House, Bubblegum Bass, Downtempo, Instrumental Hip Hop and Melodic Dubstep. The popularity and diversity of influence within future bass resulted in the birth of smaller styles, such as the Video Game Music and J-Pop-influenced Kawaii Future Bass, the jazzy, funky future bass of labels like Night Owl Collective and the more leftfield-leaning future bass of San Holo's label Bitbird.
