Brazilian phonk is a form of Funk mandelão that merges Funk automotivo rhythms, vocals, and energy, with the energetic and nocturnal production typical of the Drift Phonk scene, specifically the energetic sound of Phonk House. Brazilian phonk is characterized by noisy, aggressive and distorted production, typically short track lengths (as typical of some Brazilian funk styles), and dominant synth leads inspired by the drift sound, as well as frequent influences and elements borrowed from the more outlandish, raw sound of Beat bruxaria. Brazilian phonk has its origins in the extensive genre mixing generated in the drift scene, including tracks like "Ele te bota soca soca", which mixed drift-inspired cowbell melodies with modern Funk brasileiro rhythms; other early drift and funk combinations include the works of Brazilian duo Dragon Boy$, who rapped on drift instrumentals. The style would properly emerge with the works of Norwegian producer Slowboy, whose track "Brazilian Phonk Mano" attracted major attention. The style quickly skyrocketed to popularity, featuring prominently in TikTok edits, and gaining a distinct, anime-inspired visual style that dominates its artworks.
