Post-rock is a Rock genre with roots in, but soon rapidly distinct from, the European and U.S. Alternative Rock and Indie Rock scenes. The two key unifying musical elements among these bands are using instrumentation and riffs as facilitators for timbre, texture, and atmosphere, as well as embracing various styles and genres while distancing themselves from traditional rock structures. Despite multiple variants of the genre since its beginnings, these factors remain constant. Works are often instrumental and may also be lengthy in nature. The term post-rock was coined by music critic Simon Reynolds, who later extensively covered the genre and its development in his 1993 feature on Insides.
