Originally developed in the mid-1960s, incorporating palos (Flamenco subgenre classifications) and Copla into a form of feisty and lively Pop music (especially Yé-yé). There are strong influences from Rumba flamenca despite flamenco pop not being a flamenco palo. Still, it is considered pop aflamencado (pop with flamenco overtones, such as the singing style and rhythms). In the late 1990s, new flamenco pop acts were commonly referred to as flamenkito, a style where balladry and mid-tempos are frequent, as well as possessing more contemporary influences from Dance-Pop or even Reggaetón. Critics dismissed the developments for its superficial and clichéd 'light' flamenco elements. Nonetheless, it became favored amongst a younger audience who weren't as interested in purer flamenco forms. In the 2010s, Rosalía introduced the latest trends of "urban music" and Contemporary R&B into flamenco pop, blending them with ancient flamenco traditions. Due to the widespread success and critical acclaim of records such as El mal querer, flamenco pop would gain respectability, losing much of its derogatory connotations.
