"What It Was, Was Football" is a monologue by actor-comedian Andy Griffith. The monologue is a description of a college football game, as seen by a naive country preacher who attends the game by accident and is entirely puzzled by it.
Part 2: The Game and the FightThe narrator continues to describe the "game" with total bewilderment, describing the teams coming out of "outhouses" (locker rooms) and fighting over a "pumpkin" (the football). He interprets the football game as a violent contest where men kick and stomp each other, all while trying to carry the ball from one end of the field to the other. The story concludes with him being asked to leave by the ticket-taker
