This is an English translation of "La Mer," a French song from the 1940s originally recorded by Charles Trenet. "La Mer" was used in the 1948 movie Every Girl Should Be Married, starring Cary Grant. >> One of Darin's most popular pop standards, Beyond The Sea was also the title for the movie about his life starring Kevin Spacey as Bobby Darin. Spacey himself performed most of the music for the movie. >> A version by Robbie Williams plays over the closing credits of the 2003 movie Finding Nemo. >> Carnival Cruises used this in a commercial television advertisement campaign. >> A Techno-like remix of this song by Moby was featured on the soundtrack to the 2007 video game Bioshock. The special edition of the game features this song, along with two others on a separate disk. >> This song was prominently featured in the season one X-Files episode "Beyond the Sea" (1994) when Scully's father dies of a heart attack. In the episode, Scully is manipulated by a serial killer on death row, who sings the song - which was played at her father's funeral - to get her attention. He uses it as proof of his alleged psychic abilities and promises to relay a message from her father if she'll help him get a lesser sentence. "Barely Breathing" singer Duncan Sheik performed this when he played Bobby Darin on the '60s throwback TV series American Dreams in the 2003 episode "Where The Boys Are." Of the experience, Sheik told Pop Dose: "Well, I'm a s--t actor, so that was pretty tough for me. (Laughs) But I survived. Barely. But it was interesting to record that song ("Beyond the Sea") and attempt to sing in that style, which is so different from my own."
Somewhere beyond the sea Somewhere waiting for me My lover stands on golden sands And watches the ships that go sailin' Somewhere beyond the sea She's there watching for me If I could fly like birds on high Then straight to her arms I'd go sailing It's far beyond the stars It's near beyond the moon I know beyond a doubt My heart will lead me there soon We'll meet beyond the shore We'll kiss just as before Happy we'll be beyond the sea And never again I'll go sailing I know beyond a doubt, ah My heart will lead me there soon We'll meet (I know we'll meet) beyond the shore We'll kiss just as before Happy we'll be beyond the sea And never again I'll go sailing No more sailing So long sailing Bye bye sailing
