This song is about a girl who has a crush on a boy who doesn't appear interested in her. She expects that he'll eventually fall for her, and waits eagerly for that day. >> "One Fine Day" was written by songwriters Carole King and Gerry Goffin, who were married. It was intended for their babysitter, Little Eva, who had a hit the year earlier with their song "The Loco-Motion." Her voice did not sound right when they recorded it, so the song went to The Chiffons, who were coming off another "fine" hit: "He's So Fine," which went to #1 in March 1963. Carole King played piano on that track and was familiar with the group. The Chiffons took "One Fine Day" to #5 in July 1963. Four different versions of "One Fine Day" charted. Julie Budd took it to #93 in 1976, and Rita Coolidge to #66 in 1979. Carole King, who co-wrote the song, became a top recording artist in the '70s. In 1980 she released an album called Pearls: Songs of Goffin and King, where she performed some of the hits she wrote with Goffin in the '60s. Her version of "One Fine Day" was released as a single and went to #12. Other popular covers are by S Club Juniors in 2002 and by the all-male a cappella group The Nylons in 1991; they changed the line "one fine day, you're gonna want me for your girl" to "one fine day, you're gonna want me for your guy." This was used as the title and theme song for a 1996 romantic comedy starring George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer. It's about two people who meet on the worst day of both their lives- until they fall in love. A version by Natalie Merchant was also included on the soundtrack. >> The Carpenters covered this on their 1973 album Now And Then as part of a '60s medley. Theirs is a reasonably faithful shoo-wop version cleaned up and with the very distinctive Carpenters' production. >>
One fine day, you'll look at me And you will know our love was, meant to be One fine day, you're gonna want me for your girl The arms I long for, will open wide And you'll be proud to have me, right by your side One fine day, you're gonna want me for your girl Though I know you're the kind of boy Who only wants to run around I'll keep waiting, and, someday darling You'll come to me when you want to settle down, Oh! One fine day, we'll meet once more And then you'll want the love you threw away before One fine day, you're gonna want me for your girl One fine day, you're gonna want me for your girl
