Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac wrote this song and sang lead. She had a real talent for writing catchy love songs that bring a smile to your face - drummer Mick Fleetwood said she "always finds such novel ways to say 'I love you.'" In "Say You Love Me," she's looking forward to a night alone with her guy. At the time, she was married to John McVie, the bass player in the group. They split the following year. Like most of Christine McVie's memorable songs, this one came to her quickly. She wrote it in 1974 in the apartment she and John shared in Malibu, California. Christine had an electric piano and a view of the Pacific Ocean. "Say You Love Me" is part of Fleetwood Mac's 1975 self-titled album, their first with new additions Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. According to Christine McVie, it was one of the first songs they rehearsed together, and it was magic, especially when Buckingham came in on the harmonies. She knew this new lineup would be special, and she was right. In the previous few years the band went through different lineups, none of which delivered at the box office. The Fleetwood Mac album went to #1 in America and contained other classics like "Rhiannon" and "Landslide." The song was a live favorite for the band, always a crowd pleaser. When they were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2002, it was one of three songs they performed (along with "Landslide" and "Big Love"). When Fleetwood Mac reconvened for their The Dance tour in 1997, Lindsey Buckingham worked up a new arrangement of "Say You Love Me," playing the intro on a 5-string banjo to give is a folksy, bluegrass feel.
Have mercy, baby, on a poor girl like me You know I'm falling, falling, falling, at your feet I'm tingling right from my head to my toes So help me, help me, help me make the feeling go 'Cause when the loving starts, and the lights go down And there's not another living soul around You woo me until the sun comes up And you say that you love me Have pity, baby, just when I thought it was over (oh la la la) And now you got me running, running, running for cover (oh la la la) I'm begging you for a little sympathy (oh la la la) Oh, and if you use me again, it'll be the end of me (oh la la la, oh) 'Cause when the loving starts, and the lights go down And there's not another living soul around You woo me until the sun comes up And you say that you love me Don't wanna talk about it Don't wanna think about it Don't wanna think about it anymore So baby, baby, hope you're going to stay away (oh la la la) 'Cause I'm getting weaker, weaker, every day (oh la la la) I guess I'm not as strong as I used to be (oh la la la) Oh and if you use me again it'll be the end of me (oh la la la, oh) 'Cause when the loving starts, and the lights go down And there's not another living soul around You woo me until the sun comes up And you say that you love me 'Cause when the loving starts, and the lights go down And there's not another living soul around You woo me until the sun comes up And you say that you love me Say that you love me Say that you love me, ooh Falling falling falling Falling falling falling, yeah Falling falling falling Falling falling falling Thank you very much, thank you How about it for Jon McVie on vocals First time ever You know I think all of us have some inner demons That we struggle with, and I think all of us have Ya know, there's one now (haha) I knew he was gonna get a drum solo in there somewhere Haha, you can't stop him It's coming out I was talking about my demons not yours We all have 'em But there's all been times when we've let them Get the best of us probably as well I think it's just important to remember That no one falls into a simple set of labels It's even more important I think, to learn from your mistakes And to fight, to fight for the positive choice So, that's what this song is about, my little yes It's called My Little Demon
