Olivia Newton-John's contract for Grease stipulated that she should have a solo spot. However, nobody had any ideas for a song for her character, Sandy, until Olivia's producer John Farrar came up with "Hopelessly Devoted To You" halfway through the shoot. Director Randal Kleiser wasn't wholly convinced by the song at first and had to come up with an entirely new scene to fit it in. It was eventually filmed and recorded after the movie had wrapped and it earned the film's only Oscar nomination, for Best Music - Original Song. In the movie, Sandy sings this song while pining for her summer fling Danny, played by John Travolta. As the scene wraps up and he finishes the song, she sees his reflection in a kiddie pool. John Farrar wrote two new songs for the movie version of Grease: this and "You're The One That I Want," while Barry Gibb wrote one original song, "Grease." This was the only song from Grease to get an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. It lost to "Last Dance," performed by Donna Summer and used in the movie Thank God It's Friday. John Travolta evoked this song when he introduced the In Memoriam segment at the Oscars in 2023, seven months after Olivia Newton-John died of cancer at 73. "In this industry we have the rare luxury of getting to do what we love for a living, and sometimes getting to do it with people we come to love," a tearful Travolta said. "They've touched our hearts, they've made us smile, and became dear friends that we will always remain hopelessly devoted to."
Guess mine is not the first heart broken My eyes are not the first to cry I'm not the first to know There's just no getting over you I know I'm just a fool who's willing To sit around and wait for you But baby can't you see There's nothing else for me to do? I'm hopelessly devoted to you But now there's no way to hide Since you pushed my love aside I'm out of my head hopelessly devoted to you Hopelessly devoted to you Hopelessly devoted to you My head is saying, "Fool, forget him" My heart is saying, "Don't let go" Hold on till the end And that's what I intend to do I'm hopelessly devoted to you But now there's no way to hide Since you pushed my love aside I'm out of my head hopelessly devoted to you Hopelessly devoted to you Hopelessly devoted to you
