A music video to accompany the release of "Hot Stuff" was first released onto YouTube on September 17, 2020.[54] The video is directed by Bo Webb, starring Outer Banks cast members Madelyn Cline and Chase Stokes. The music video details a blossoming love between the two as they dance the night away amidst blue and purple hues
Donna Summer was not a wild child in real life, but she often played a libidinous vixen in her songs. In "Hot Stuff," she's calling every guy she knows looking for some action. How did Summer pull it off? "That was easy," her husband, Bruce Sudano, told Songfacts. "She knew immediately what the character of the song was, because she was an actress who sang. She just jumped right on that and injected it with the rock and soul that that song required, quite naturally." This disco classic was written by Pete Bellotte, Harold Faltermeyer and Keith Forsey. Bellotte co-wrote a few other hits for Summer, including "Love To Love You Baby" and "Heaven Knows." Faltermeyer had a solo hit in 1984 with "Axel F," and Forsey's credits include "Don't You (Forget About Me)" for Simple Minds and "Shakedown" for Bob Seger. This was Summer's second #1 hit on the Hot 100; her first was her disco cover of "MacArthur Park." Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, who is a prolific session musician and at one point was a member of Steely Dan, did the guitar solo. When the Best Female Rock Vocal Performance category was added at the Grammy Awards in 1980, Donna Summer won for "Hot Stuff." Classifying the song as rock is certainly a stretch, but Summer's vocals could hold up in any genre. She beat out Rickie Lee Jones, Tanya Tucker, Carly Simon and Bonnie Raitt for the award. This was used in the movie The Full Monty in a scene where the guys hear it on the radio and get the idea to take it all off in their show. The Bad Girls album was recorded at Rusk Sound Studios in Los Angeles, with two of this song's writers playing many of the instruments: Keith Forsey was on drums and Harold Faltermeyer played keyboards. The bass player on this song was Scott Edwards, who also played on the song "Bad Girls" and many other disco hits. Edwards told Songfacts: "On 'Hot Stuff,' they had the chord charts. They said on that one, 'Do the traditional disco thing,' bass-wise. It tried to have a little more musicality, but it was getting into that standardized disco mode, the usual drum and bass part. The earlier stuff was more musical, and I guess that's why I count it as a little bit better."
