The music video, directed by Eamon McCabe, features the group in a surreal dream sequence, with the lead singer falling asleep in a black London taxicab and waking at the end, being driven away by the driver.
Breathe were that rarity, a British pop group who had more success on the American singles charts (five Top 40 hits) than back home (just the one). This was their sole UK Top 40 hit. The ballad was kept from the Billboard Hot 100 summit by another Brit, Steve Winwood's "Roll With It," which just wouldn't roll over and let "Hands" through. One consolation for the Breathe boys was that the song ranked inside Billboard's 1988 Year-End Top Ten at #9. The 45 disc provoked a sizable nausea factor for the more cynically-minded of us thanks to the message on the back of the record sleeve. It dedicated the song to "all those who, in innocence, still dream of a perfect love."
As I watch you move, across the moonlit room There's so much tenderness in your loving Tomorrow I must leave, the dawn knows no reprieve God give me strength when I am leaving... So raise your hands to heaven and pray That we'll be back together someday Tonight, I need your sweet caress Hold me in the darkness Tonight, you calm my restlessness You relieve my sadness As we move to embrace, tears run down your face I whisper words of love, so softly I can't believe this pain, it's driving me insane Without your touch, life will be lonely So raise your hands to heaven and pray That we'll be back together someday Tonight, I need your sweet caress Hold me in the darkness Tonight, you calm my restlessness You relieve my sadness Morning has come, another day I must pack my bags and say goodbye.
