In the lead single from her debut album, Braxton is trying to move on from a broken relationship, but all the sad love songs on the radio bring up memories of her ex. Written by R&B hitmakers Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and Daryl Simmons, it was Braxton's first Top 10 hit on the US pop chart. Babyface first met Braxton when she and her sisters auditioned for him and his producing partner L.A. Reid at their Atlanta-based label LaFace Records. The duo knew she had the chops to be a solo artist apart from her singing sisters and had her record the tracks "Give U My Heart," a duet with Babyface, and "Love Shoulda Brought You Home." Both songs were featured on the soundtrack to Eddie Murphy's 1992 comedy Boomerang and primed her for the release of a solo album. Braxton won a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, beating fellow nominees Whitney Houston (for "I'm Every Woman") and Janet Jackson (for "That's The Way Love Goes"). Daryl Simmons was primarily the lyricist when writing with Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and L.A. Reid. He explained to Songwriter Universe: "Lyrics was my contribution. Sometimes L.A. would have a drum track, but most of the time Kenny would have chords and melodies already formulated. Kenny would say, "Hey, this is what I'm thinking…this is the melody…I've got this concept like 'Another Sad Love Song.' So I was good at dissecting his story and jumping on where he wanted to go, and helping him get there." Babyface on meeting Braxton: "Toni was like a little me when she walked in. She knew what she wanted, and I knew exactly what to give her to sound great. I could hang with her then."
Since you been gone I been hangin' around here lately With my mind messed up Jumped in my car tried to clear my mind Didn't help me I guess I'm all messed up now baby Soon as I jumped into my ride Those memories start to play A song comes on the radio And there you are baby once again It's just another sad love song Rackin' my brain like crazy Guess I'm all torn up Be it fast or slow It doesn't let go Or shake me And it's all because of you Since you been gone I keep thinkin' about you baby Gets me all choked up This heart of mine keeps Dreamin' of you and it's crazy You'd think I'd had enough As soon as I get you out my head I'm in your car again Just one request from the radio I'm back in love sugar once again It's just another sad love song Rackin' my brain like crazy Guess I'm all torn up Be it fast or slow It doesn't let go Or shake me And it's all because of you Here comes the strings Then somebody sings Only takes a beat And then it starts killin' me darlin' Only takes one note, I tell ya, From that radio It's just Another, Lonely, Love song.
