The music video was released the same day as the single, 23 May 2019. It was directed by Grant Singer.[11] In the video, "Hemmings, wearing a leather ensemble and glitter eyeshadow, sings chained by the wrists to the roof of a blue-lit cave while guitarist Michael Clifford, bassist Calum Hood and drummer Ashton Irwin rock out in front of the candle-studded backdrop [...] In addition to the cave setting, the video also features a striking seductress and haunting scenes of the bandmates submerged in on orange-lit pool and individually strolling down a long hallway in which their headshots are set ablaze."[13] The blue lighting prominent throughout the video follows the aesthetic of the single's artwork. 4 symbols, representing each member, which were used in the teasers for the song, were also featured in the video as tattoos along the female dancer's spine as well as on a burning poster by the end.[14] As of March 2021, the video has over 55 million views.
5 Seconds of Summer frontman Luke Hemmings is caught up in a toxic relationship, but he still adores his lover even though they are constantly at each others throats. Is it easier to stay? Is it easier to go? I don't wanna know, oh But I know that I'm never, ever gonna change And you know that you're always gonna stay the same Hemmings is contemplating whether they should stay together, knowing that neither he nor his lover will ever change. However, the singer admits he "don't wanna know" the answer, indicating he doesn't really want the relationship to end. "Easier" was written by the 5 Seconds of Summer band members along with: American singer-songwriter Charlie Puth, best known for his solo hits "We Don't Talk Anymore" and "Attention." Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, who has also written songs for the likes of Adele ("Rumour Has It"), Beyoncé ("Halo"), Leona Lewis ("Bleeding Love") and Ellie Goulding ("Burn"). Songwriters and producers Ali Tamposi, Andrew Watt and Louis Bell, who all contributed towards Camila Cabello's huge hit "Havana." The song has a hard rock feel, but with a relatively sparse arrangement. 5 Seconds of Summer told Rolling Stone it came about because there has been "a growing attention to industrial rhythm within the band." They said that the track is "derivative of the driving drum groove" that's heard on Nine Inch Nail's track "Closer." The band added that they were also inspired by dark, synth-heavy groups such as Depeche Mode and Tears for Fears. This is the lead single from 5 Seconds of Summer fourth album Calm. The record title is an acronym of the first letters of the band members' names, Calum, Ashton, Luke and Michael. Luke Hemmings explained to HMV: "With this album being a massive growth period for us and the band truly understanding the importance of the four individual artists in the band, we felt it was a fitting name once it came about. It's also a nod to our fans as they have been using the C A L M acronym for years."
