In November 2020, a lyric video of "My Head & My Heart" was released.[26] A video for the acoustic version of the song was released on February 11, 2021.[27] Max is seen performing with three female string musicians inside a room covered in red lighting. Her usual blonde hair is colored black, although it is still shaped as the 'Max Cut'. Andrea Dresdale of ABC News Radio noted that the visual was a "cute nod" to the song lyric, "I picture all the perfect that we lived / 'Til I cut the strings on your tiny violin".[28] A performance video was released on February 19, 2021, which depicts British drag queen Bimini Bon-Boulash of RuPaul's Drag Race UK lip syncing the song at the Heaven superclub.[29][30] The video encouraged viewers to support the charity Mermaids.[7] In an interview with the Hit Network on February 4, 2021, Max stated that an accompanying music video for "My Head & My Heart" was in development, which she declared as her "sexiest music video yet!".[31] It was filmed under restrictive COVID-19 guidelines, as members on set were COVID-19 tested several times and wore masks between scenes.[32][33] The music video was released on February 25, 2021, and is directed by Charm La'Donna and Emil Nava.[34][35] Max acknowledged that it contrasted from her previous videos by stating that it was both "vulnerable" and "dance-inspired", as she envisioned the music video's concept while writing the song.[1][32] It depicts Max and a cohort of dancers writhing, gyrating, and performing choreography inside a nightclub.[16][36][37] She wore several outfits such as a small crop top, red mesh, glitter-covered leather, and a pair of Skechers D'Lites Biggest Fan sneakers.[38]
Here, Ava Max sings of her former boyfriend, whom she can't forget. Their relationship had been going well until something unspecified happened that made her walk out. Now the songstress feels torn between returning to him or not; her heart says yes, her head says no. Ava Max wrote and recorded "My Head & My Heart" during the 2020 fall and released it as the first single from the digital reissue of Heaven & Hell. The singer's internal struggle of whether to go back to her former lover or permanently ditch him continues the duality concept that runs through the album. When angels tell me run, and monsters call it love My head and my heart are caught in-between The contrast of "head" and "heart" is another form of duality, reinforcing the record's heaven vs. evil theme. The dance-pop anthem samples the melody of German outfit A Touch of Class' 2000 Eurodance hit "Around the World (La La La La La)," which itself is a cover of Russian duo Ruki Vverh!'s 1998 song "Pesenka." All three songs incorporate the same "la la la la la" hook. Ava Max wrote the song with the American singer-songwriters Madison Love and Tia Scola, and producers Earwulf, and Cirkut, with additional production handled by Jonas Blue. Madison Love co-penned nine of the tracks on the original Heaven & Hell record, including "Sweet But Psycho" and "Kings & Queens." Canadian songsmith Cirkut is the album's principal producer. He also played all the instruments on the track.
Baby, now and then I think about me now and who I could have been And then I picture all the perfect that we lived 'Til I cut the strings on your tiny violin, oh whoa My mind's got a m-m-mind of its own right now And it makes me hate me I'll explode like a dynamite if I can't decide, baby My head and my heart are torturing me, yeah 'Cause my mind, and your arms, I go to extremes, yeah When angels tell me run, and monsters call it love, oh My head and my heart are caught in-between, yeah La-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la-la-la Tell me yes or no Asking the heavens, "Should I stay or should I go?" You held my hand when I had nothing left to hold And now I'm on a roll, oh Oh whoa My mind's got a m-m-mind of its own right now And it makes me hate me I'll explode like a dynamite if I can't decide, baby My head and my heart are torturing me, yeah 'Cause my mind, and your arms, I go to extremes, yeah When angels tell me run, and monsters call it love, oh My head and my heart are caught in-between, yeah La-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la-la-la I'm standin' at the crossroads I cross my heart with X and O's Which way leads to forever? Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh God only knows My head and my heart are torturing me, yeah 'Cause my mind, and your arms, I go to extremes, yeah When angels tell me run, and monsters call it love, oh My head (my head) and my heart (my heart) Are caught in-between, yeah La-la-la-la-la (oh) La-la-la-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la (oh) La-la-la-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la (La, la-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la, oh) La-la-la-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la (oh yeah) La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
