Matthew Burdette is a Los Angeles rapper and singer-songwriter who records under the name of Blxst (pronounced "blast"). This song is from the deluxe version of his debut album, No Love Lost. "Chosen" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 ending October 9, 2021, marking Blxst's first entry on the chart. The song finds Blxst calling on a couple of fellow West coast artists, Ty Dolla $ign and Tyga. All three contribute verses directed towards their "chosen" love interests. Each of them talk about a different scenario: Blxst addresses his girlfriend, who he chose to be his romantic partner. He bases their relationship on loyalty, and when he's with her, she makes him feel richer than he already is. Ty Dolla $ign's love interest has a boyfriend who controls her. He tells the girl she would be better off with him. Tyga's woman is a groupie, and their relationship is all about the sex. Blxst co-produced the track with T.Reg. They also worked together on the LA artist's collaboration with Dom Kennedy, "Got It All." Shot by madebyJames with Meanwhile, the video draws inspiration from iconic Black college films such as School Daze, Stomp the Yard, and Love & Basketball. We see Blxst, Tyga, and Ty Dolla $ign enjoying the campus experience at the fictional Evgle University (named after Blxst's Evgle Records). Blxst came up with "Chosen" on a normal working day. "It felt fun creating it. Something about it felt different," Blxst told Billboard. "It gave a different energy as I was recording it. Then Ty Dolla Sign laid his verse, and it was all up from there."
