"Going, Going, Gone" is a heartbreak song where Luke Combs sings of falling in love with a free spirit. Because the girl follows her own path, Combs knows there's no way he can stop her from disappearing when she wants to move on. During the chorus, Combs compares the girl's reluctance to stick around to things that happen over a short period. Like lightning in the sky Like fireworks in July Like a left field home run ball Like a whiskey shot at last call Like the things Combs has listed, it won't be long before the girl is "going, going, gone." Going, going, gone" is an auctioneer's traditional announcement that bidding is ending. Other artists with songs titled "Going, Going, Gone" include: Bob Dylan for his 1974 Planet Waves album. Lee Greenwood for his 1983 album Somebody's Gonna Love You. Released as a single, it topped the Country chart. George Strait for his 2015 Cold Beer Album. 2018 American Idol winner Maddie Poppe for her coronation song. Lucy Dacus for her 2021 Home Video album. "Going, Going, Gone" is the closing track of Growin' Up. Luke Combs wrote the songs over a two-year period with Chip Matthews and Jonathan Singleton. Matthews and Singleton previously co-produced the six bonus tracks on the deluxe edition of Combs' previous album, What You See Ain't Always What You Get. Combs penned "Going, Going, Gone" with his frequent writing partner Ray Fulcher, and with James McNair ("Lovin' On You," "On the Other Line"). The musicians are: Acoustic guitar: Charlie Worsham Electric guitar: Jonathan Singleton, Rob McNelley and Sol Philcox-Littlefield Bass: Jonathan Singleton and Steve Mackey Drums: Jerry Roe Keyboards: Jim "Moose" Brown Steve Mackey is one of the most sought-out Nashville studio musicians. In 2021 the Academy of Country Music nominated him as "Bass Player of the Year." He first worked with Combs on the country star's What You See Ain't Always What You Get deluxe album. He's not the same Steve Mackey as the English musician who was Pulp's bass guitarist.
Some things in life are meant to fly And others, they were born to run You can't tie down up and leaving Like the changing of the seasons Good things, they come and then they go Like a runaway southbound train Like an Arizona desert rain Like lightning in the sky Like fireworks in July Like a left field home run ball Like a whiskey shot at last call It's like she was made for moving on That girl is going, going, gone I could say it wasn't meant to be But maybe meant to be's misunderstood Can't hold on to letting go Change the way the river flows Loving her's like roping in the wind Like a runaway southbound train Like an Arizona desert rain Like lightning in the sky Like fireworks in July Like a left field home run ball Like a whiskey shot at last call It's like she was made for moving on That girl is going, going, gone She ain't got one bit of stick around There's no sense in trying to slow her down Like a runaway southbound train Like an Arizona desert rain Like lightning in the sky Like fireworks in July Like a left field home run ball Like a whiskey shot at last call It's like she was made for moving on That girl is going, going, gone Going, going, gone Going, going, gone
