"Love You Anyway" is a wistful ballad in which Luke Combs reflects on his unwavering love for his current romantic partner, despite knowing their relationship may eventually lead to heartbreak. In the candid opening verse, Combs uses vivid metaphors to express the intensity of his love, showcasing his polished vocal ability. If your kiss turned me to stone I'd be a statue standing tall in Ancient Rome And if your touch shattered me like glass I'd be in pieces trying to make the breaking last The chorus picks up the tempo and features a sincere declaration from Combs. Over stirring fiddle and drum accompaniment, he admits that some things in life leave a person with no option, and he would continue to love his partner even if he knew it would eventually hurt him. There's just some things that leave a man no choice Like a compass needle needing its true north Even if I knew the day we met you'd be the reason this heart breaks Oh, I'd love you anyway Combs co-wrote "Love You Anyway" alongside frequent collaborators Dan Isbell and Ray Fulcher. Its origins lie in a show on Valentine's Day 2020, when the singer dedicated his hit "Beautiful Crazy" to his fiancée (now wife), Nicole, saying, "If you're in here, I love you. If not, you know I do anyway." Unbeknownst to him, Dan Isbell wrote down "Love You Anyway" as a potential song title in his phone after hearing his dedication. Later that month, Isbell shared the idea with Combs and Fulcher. They decided to write a song about loving someone so deeply that you would continue to do so even if you knew they would ultimately break your heart. "It came off very poetic," said Combs, "and we wanted to find the words that could really give meaning to what we were trying to say, but as we say in the song, we didn't know if there were deep enough words made for that." Ultimately, they created a heartbreak and love song that is very special to Combs, as dedicating a song to Nicole ended up inspiring another song about her. Combs co-produced this fiddle-driven neo-traditional country song with Jonathan Singleton and Chip Matthews. The haunting solo in the bridge seamlessly enhances the emotional impact of Combs' heartfelt proclamations. Combs first released audio from a work tape of the song back in late February 2020. He dropped it as a promotional single from Gettin' Old on February 10, 2023.
If your kiss turned me to stone I'd be a statue standing tall in Ancient Rome And if your touch shattered me like glass I'd be in pieces trying to make the breaking last If it took one look to turn my days to night At least I'd have the stars that sparkle in your eyes There's just some things that leave a man no choice Like a compass needle needing its true north Even if I knew the day we met you'd be the reason this heart breaks Oh, I'd love you anyway I know just tryin' to write a song I run the risk that I could get your perfect wrong And well, I guess what I'm tryin' to say If there ain't words been made could shoulder so much weight And if you turned your back on me and walked away Not a thing about the way I feel would change There's just some things that leave a man no choice Like a compass needle needing its true north Even if I knew the day we met you'd be the reason this heart breaks Oh, I'd love you anyway There's just some things that leave a man no choice Like a compass needle needing its true north Even if I knew the day we met you'd be the reason this heart breaks Oh, I'd love you anyway Even if I knew the day we met you'd be the reason this heart breaks Oh, I'd love you anyway
