The music video was directed by Tyler, the Creator under the alias of Wolf Haley and uploaded on YouTube on August 8, 2018. In the opening scene, A$AP Rocky talks on the phone, as Tyler gets ready for another workday in the close quarters of his aircraft carrier. Kali Uchis appears far away at sea on a rescue boat with other rowers, all of them wearing yellow raincoats.[3] The scene shifts to Tyler on the top deck of the military ship, donning a yellow beret and then flips to Tyler oddly wearing a ghost bed sheet, featuring only the eyes poked out, along with a bucket hat. A tire swings in the background, and when he is unveiled, a swarm of bees attack the screen
This self-produced kaleidoscopic love song is Tyler the Creator's personal story of fantasizing about a lover that only exists in his mind. You live in my dream state Anytime I count sheep That's the only time we make up You exist behind my eyelids, my eyelids I don't wanna wake up Tyler is totally wrapped up in his dream lover. The song features vocals performed by Colombian singer-songwriter Kali Uchis, who also featured on two tracks from Tyler's Cherry Bomb album. Asked by Billboard how she first hooked up with Tyler, the songstress replied: "He reached out to me on Twitter like, 'hey, when you come to California, hit me up.' When I went to California, I [did]. It started like, "oh yeah, get on this song. Do these little 'do do do do's.'" And then he started realizing, 'oh damn, you work really fast! Oh wow, you're writing all this stuff right now.' We just respect the s--t out of each other as artists, so that's why we work so well." Tyler originally wrote the song for former One Direction member Zayn Malik. Writing on Twitter, the rapper explained that he decided to keep the track for himself after Malik twice skipped the studio sessions to record the song. Tyler added that he was glad that he ended up recording the track, saying that it "worked out actually." Tyler previously collaborated with Malik when he remixed the ex 1D member's single "Pillowtalk" from his 2016 debut album.
Okay, okay, okay, okay
Okay, okay, oh
You live in my dream state
Relocate my fantasy
I stay in reality
You live in my dream state
Any time I count sheep
That's the only time we make up, make up
You exist behind my eyelids, my eyelids
Now I don't wanna wake up
20/20, 20/20 vision
Cupid hit me, Cupid hit me with precision
I wonder if you look both ways
When you cross my mind
I said, I said
I'm sick of, sick of, sick of, sick of chasing
You're the one that's always running through my daydream, I
I can only see your face when I close my eyes
Can I get a kiss?
And can you make it last forever?
I said, I'm 'bout to go to war
I don't know if I'ma see you again
Can I get a kiss? (Can I?)
And can you make it last forever? (Can you)
I said I'm 'bout to go to war ('bout to)
I don't know if I'ma see you again
(Ayy, switch it up)
I said, okay, okay, okay, okie-dokie, my infatuation
Is translatin' to another form of what you call it? (Love)
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, I ain't met you, I've been lookin'
Stop the waitin' 'fore I stop the chasin' like a alcoholic
You don't understand me, what the fuck do you mean?
It's them rose-tinted cheeks, yeah, it's them dirt-colored eyes
Sugar-honey iced tea, bumblebee on the scene
Yeah, I'd give up my bakery to have a piece of your pie
Ugh
