"Overdrive" is a rock and jangle pop anthem in which Post Malone sings about living life full throttle. But hold up! Love's got him hitting the brakes, ready to change gears for that special girl. Post Malone starts with the chorus where he bemoans spending his "nights over overdrive," leaving him feeling burned out and uninspired. In the verses, he talks about a girl for whom he'd change his tune, even remove the tattoos to be cool in her eyes. In a twist at the end, Posty reveals he's already in a relationship but would consider walking away from his current sweetheart to be with her. "Overdrive" was released through Republic and Mercury Records as the third single from Post Malone's fifth studio album, Austin, on July 14, 2023. Post Malone teamed up with his regular collaborators Louis Bell, Andrew Watt, and Billy Walsh to write "Overdrive." Bell and Watt also helped Malone produce the jam. Malone, Bell, Watt, and Walsh also co-wrote Austin's lead single, "Chemical." "Overdrive" is an acoustically led mid-tempo rock track that contrasts with Malone's hip-hop-leaning early career. There's even a splash of emotional orchestration with a 14-piece string ensemble that amps up Posty's yearning to be with his love interest. Orchestrator David Campbell, the father of singer-songwriter Beck, arranged the strings.
I spend my nights on overdrive I live my life so overtime And there's nowhere I can hide Now I live my life on overdrive I could be more like him if that's cool with you I'd do anything to be cool to you Cool to you I spend my nights on overdrive I live my life so uninspired There ain't no angels in this world So I live my life on overdrive I'd remove my tattoos, if that's cool with you I'd do anything to be cool to you Cool to you, uh I could end it with her if that's cool with you I'd do anything to be cool to you
