"Bad Idea Right?" is a playful '90s-style rocker about reconnecting with a former boyfriend. It captures those oh-so-familiar temptations and musings that dance through our minds when an ex comes knocking. Rodrigo knows that reuniting with her old flame is a misstep. The fractures that led to their breakup remain, and months have passed without a word exchanged. Yet, here he is ringing her up, giving her his new address. The motive is unmistakable, an invitation for physical entanglement. My brain goes, "Ah" Can't hear my thoughts Like blah-blah-blah Should probably not Rodrigo had intended to spend the evening with her girlfriends, but the allure her ex exudes is so overwhelming it drowns out any rational discourse. I'm gettin' in the car, wreckin' all my plans I know I should stop, but I can't And I told my friends I was asleep But I never said where or in whose sheets So, Rodrigo embraces the temptation and drives to her ex's apartment. Rodrigo wrote "Bad Idea Right?" alongside her regular collaborator, Dan Nigro, who also produced the track. Geffen Records released the crunchy guitar anthem as the second single from Guts on August 11, 2023. Rodrigo and Nigro made the punky call-and-response ode to ex-boyfriend temptation in New York City in 2022. "'Bad Idea Right?' started with us making a joke song about me hooking up with an ex-boyfriend, but then we realized we were actually onto something," said the pop star. "We were throwing the weirdest things at the wall - in one of the choruses there's a part that sounds like an instrument in the background, but it's me gradually screaming louder and louder." Dan Nigro engineered the song with Sam Stewart, Dan Viafore, and Sterling Laws. Nigro plays guitar, percussion, bass, and drum programming, Stewart electric guitar, and Laws drums. Stewart, Viafore, and Laws also contributed to Rodrigo's debut album, Sour. Viafore served as assistant engineer on six of the tracks. Stewart played guitar on "Hope Ur Ok" and Laws drums on "Deja Vu" and "Jealousy, Jealousy." Stewart and Laws also played on Guts' lead single, "Vampire." Petra Collins directed the music video, which is a visual representation of the song's lyrics. It shows Rodrigo attending a house party with three of her real-life friends: actress Iris Apatow, her former Bizaardvark co-star Madison Hsu, and Canadian pop singer-songwriter Tate McRae. Rodrigo exits the soiree and makes a hazardous journey to reconnect with her ex. Canadian photographer and fashion designer Petra Collins is Rodrigo's go-to music video collaborator, having previously directed the visuals for the singles "Good 4 U," "Brutal" and "Vampire."
