"Cobra" contains raw, real talk, as Megan Thee Stallion spits about her struggles with emotional pain, depression, and anxiety. She lays out losing both her parents and breaking up with her rapper boyfriend Pardison Fontaine. Megan was also shot in the foot by fellow rapper Tory Lanez and endured a years-long legal battle with her former label, 1501 Certified Entertainment. Worn down by all that life has thrown at her, the Texan rapper admits to drinking excessively and thinking dark thoughts about suicide. Despite all her traumas, Megan refuses to stay down. In the outro, she decides to keep moving forward and ignore her ex's calls. Cobras are known for their fearless behavior. When they feel threatened, they will stand tall and spread their hood to look more intimidating. Cobras are also solitary animals, relying on themselves for everything they need. They hunt their own food, build their own nests, and raise their own young. This guitar-powered trap-rocker reflects Megan's bravery and self-sufficiency much like the snake it shares a title with. "Cobras exemplify courage and self-reliance," Megan explained. "They stand tall and fierce in the face of challenges, teaching one to tap into their inner strength and rely on oneself to conquer their threats. Emulating the cobra helps one be more confident in the person they are within." Megan Thee Stallion released "Cobra" on November 3, 2023. It's the first release on her own music and entertainment entity, Hot Girl Productions, following the settlement of her legal battle with 1501 Certified Entertainment. Megan Thee Stallion teamed up with producer Derrick Milano, Joel and Taylor Banks from the sibling production team Bankroll Got It, and her engineer Shawn "Source" Jarrett to cook up this cathartic jam. The music video, directed by Douglas Bernardt, kicks off with a spoken word message: "Just as a snake sheds its skin, we must shed our past over and over again." We then see Megan emerge from a cobra's jaws, symbolically shedding her skin while a crowd watches. Then, she gets into a dance routine alongside a crew of women. Megan Thee Stallion teamed up with Canadian metal band Spiritbox for a rock remix of "Cobra". The new version sees Megan spitting rhymes over Spiritbox's beefy guitar riffs before vocalist Courtney LaPlante switches up the tempo on a new chorus. LaPlante also brings some serious heat to the song's bridge with his guttural backing vocals.
