Hailing from Mobile, Alabama, The Red Clay Strays weave classic country, Southern rock, and gospel threads into their own brand of high-octane rock and roll. The quintet are known for their energetic live performances and authentic sound. After a five-year ordeal with a major label that tried to polish their raw sound and constrain their creativity, The Red Clay Strays decided to take matters into their own hands. With the support of their loyal fans who contributed to a crowdfunding campaign, the band secured a private studio where they could bring their musical vision to fruition. In a marathon session of eight days, they recorded 12 songs, working tirelessly and sleeping on the studio floor. The outcome was their debut album, Moment of Truth, which hit the shelves on April 29, 2022. Penned by frontman Brandon Coleman and guitarist Drew Nix with frequent Kip Moore collaborator Dan Couch, "Wondering Why" is the album's breakout song. It debuted at #93 on the Hot 100 dated December 30, 2023. Coleman sings of his romantic partner's love for him despite their different backgrounds. She had a silver spoon and never misses Sunday church. His family is "blue-collar, low-dollar, out here where concrete meets old red dirt." Coleman can't help wondering why she wants to be with him, but every night he thanks his maker that she does.
She comes from silver spoon, golden rule Private school, never miss Sunday church And I come from blue-collar, low-dollar Out here where concrete meets old red dirt And I don't know what happened But it sure don't add up on paper But when I close my eyes late at night You can bet I thank my maker She keeps on lovin' me, loves me the way I am She's not just along for the ride, she's my biggest fan Lord, it's a little piece of Heaven when we lay down at night She keeps on lovin' me and I keep on wondering why She's got a wicked smile, angel eyes Every guy wantin' to hold her close She's as pretty as sin Like the sun sinkin' down on the California coast She keeps on lovin' me, loves me the way I am She's not just along for the ride, she's my biggest fan Lord, it's a little piece of Heaven when we lay down at night She keeps on lovin' me and I keep on wondering why I don't know what happened But it sure don't add up on paper And as long as she lets me I'll take her wherever she wants me to take her, oh She keeps on lovin' me, loves me the way I am She's not just along for the ride, she's my biggest fan And it's a little piece of Heaven when we lay down at night She keeps on lovin' me and I keep on wondering why She keeps on lovin' me and I keep on wondering why
