Anyone who's ever spent five minutes listening to country music knows the drill: parents and kids, it's a big theme. Beyoncé has been circling this topic since she surprised us with her self-titled album back in 2013. Well, on "Protector," she's back at it, but this time with a lot more acoustic guitar. "Protector" is a sweet, slow song about that tightrope walk every mom (and probably some dads too) has to face: keeping your kids safe while also knowing they have to fly the coop eventually. It starts out with this adorable little voice note – turns out it's Rumi, Beyoncé's second-oldest daughter (twin to brother Sir Carter), who is begging for a lullaby. (How many kids that age still say 'lullaby'? Cute, right?) This sets the mood for the whole song – a mama bear promising her cubs all the love and support in the world, even when it's time for them to roam free. The lyrics are clever, playing on the double meaning of "protector" and "projector." It's a balancing act, for sure, and the song captures that mix of fierce love and bittersweet acceptance. One minute it's all gentle lullaby vibes, the next it's this mama lioness image: powerful and protective. There's a little personal touch thrown in the bridge. Beyoncé sings about seeing her daughter's face in her husband's gaze. That might seem a little mushy for some folks, but here's the thing: Beyoncé's twins were delivered via emergency C-section and Dad got the first peek. So it's a sweet detail, a reminder that the whole family unit is in this together. "Protector" is track 4 on Beyoncé's country album Cowboy Carter, and let us tell you, it's a full-on Simba moment. Forget wranglers and dusty trails, this song is pure Lion King. Beyoncé practically roars about legacy, circling back to themes from that album. It makes sense, considering the previous track, "16 Carriages," is about a young girl growing up way too fast and leaving the nest early. "'Protector" flips the script, with a parent building a safe haven for their little one. Beyoncé co-wrote the song with Ryan Beatty, Cam and Jack Rochon. She co-produced it with Rochron. Cam is a country singer-songwriter whose breakout hit came in 2015 with "Burning House," which reached #29 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Diane," the lead single from Cam's third album, was written from the inverted perspective of Dolly Parton's "Jolene," which Beyoncé covered for "Cowboy Carter." She contributed to four other Cowboy Carter tracks: "Ameriican Requiem," "Daughter," "Tyrant" and "Amen." Ryan Beatty used to be a teen idol but by this time was working his magic behind the scenes for the likes of Brockhampton, the group's front man Kevin Abstract, and Tyler the Creator. Beatty released his debut solo album, Boy In Jeans, in 2018. He contributed to three other Cowboy Carter tracks: "Bodyguard," "Just for Fun," and "II Hands II Heaven." Jack "Ro" Rochon is a Canadian producer, songwriter and classically trained multi-instrumentalist. He's also worked with 6lack ("Float") and H.E.R ("Good To Me"). He contributed to three other Cowboy Carter tracks: "Dolly P," "Jolene" and "II Hands II Heaven." "Protector" debuted at #42 on the Hot 100 dated April 13, 2024. At 6 years and 9 months old, Rumi Carter surpassed her older sister, Blue Ivy Carter, as the youngest-charting female artist to reach the Hot 100. Blue Ivy debuted at 7 years old in 2019 thanks to her featured appearance on the #76-peaking "Brown Skin Girl," from The Lion King: The Gift.
