"Field Trip" is a high-octane hip-hop anthem from Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign's collaborative album, Vultures 2. Featuring verses from Playboi Carti, Ty Dolla $ign and Kodak Black, the track is anchored by Don Toliver's hook. West takes a more subdued role, contributing sporadic lines. The rappers detail a hedonistic lifestyle centered around sex and one-night stands. The title "Field Trip" stands in stark contrast to the song's vulgar and often dark content. Ride it just how I like my bike Take her on a field trip There are a few potential interpretations for the title: 1. Irony: The title might be ironic, juxtaposing the idea of a carefree, educational outing with the song's hedonistic and often vulgar themes. This could be a commentary on the superficiality of certain aspects of popular culture. 2. Escapism: The term "field trip" can imply a journey or escape from reality. The song could be seen as a sonic escape into a world of excess and pleasure. 3. Unexpectedness: The title might simply be chosen for its unexpected nature, drawing listeners in with curiosity. Playboi Carti, Don Toliver, and Kodak Black have all previously worked with Kanye West. Kanye West served as executive producer on Playboi Carti's Whole Lotta Red album, where he also made a guest appearance on the track "Go2DaMoon." In return, Carti featured on two songs from West's Donda longplayer: "Junya" and "Off The Grid." Their collaborative relationship continued on Vultures 1 with Carti appearing on the tracks "Carnival" and "Fuk Sumn." Kodak Black joined forces with West and Ty Dolla $ign on the Vultures 1 song "Dunk." Don Toliver also collaborated with Kanye West on Donda, appearing on the track "Moon." Following the success of their collaboration on "Carnival," Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign maintained a close working relationship with Playboi Carti. In early 2024, leaked versions of "Field Trip" began circulating online, initially titled "Venom." While Kodak Black eventually contributed to the final track, earlier iterations featured Lil Durk. However, Durk's involvement was cut short because of alleged lyrical jabs aimed at West. Despite this, the two rappers later collaborated on another Vultures 2 track, "Dead," alongside Future. West and Ty Dolla $ign share production credits with Legendary Traxster, Wheezy, and Dez Wright. All three guest rappers, along with West and Ty, contributed to the song's writing. A sample of the drums from UK trip-hop legends Portishead's "Machine Gun" kicks in at the start of Kodak Black's verse. The use of the sample, however, was unauthorized, according to Portishead's Geoff Barrow. This isn't the first time the band has faced this issue; The Weeknd also sampled "Machine Gun" without permission for his 2013 track "Belong to the World."
