Let us take a moment to marvel at the humble dandelion. It is, after all, one of nature's more peculiar creations - technically a weed, yet relentlessly charming, endlessly photogenic, and capable of colonizing entire suburban lawns with the quiet confidence of a Roman army. People have written poems about them, brewed them into tea, and made countless wishes upon their fluffy, floaty heads. It was only a matter of time before someone wrote a sultry pop song about one. Enter Ariana Grande. In her track "Dandelion" - tucked into the deluxe edition of Eternal Sunshine like a scented love note - you'll find a breathy, beat-driven ode to longing and romantic possibility. The song is, for lack of a more dignified term, lusty. Not in an uncomfortable way, mind you. It's all soft lighting and scented candles - desire with good posture. Grande positions herself as the dandelion. Delicate, yes, but also resilient. She offers her romantic partner the chance to fulfill their desires but warns of the fragility of the opportunity. The song is flirtation via botany. Boy, just don't blow this, got me like, "What's your wish list?" You can get anything you'd like I'll be your dandelion Now, for those who enjoy a bit of folklore with their pop music (and who doesn't?), the dandelion has long been associated with romantic superstition. If you can blow all the seeds off one in a single breath, it means the person you love will love you back. If you can't, well, maybe try again, or take the hint and move on. It's nature's version of a Magic 8 Ball, only fuzzier. Fans have been quick to link "Dandelion" to Grande's relationship with her Wicked co-star Ethan Slater, which bloomed sometime in 2023 shortly after her separation from husband Dalton Gomez, and somewhat awkwardly before Slater's own marital situation reached a conclusion. Public opinion offered its opinions (loudly), but Grande responded the way all pop stars do: with glittery metaphors and minor-key melodies. "Dandelion" is more celebration than confession. It is a sensual and upbeat celebration of love, departing from the more reflective tone of other tracks on Eternal Sunshine Deluxe: Brighter Days Ahead such as "Hampstead." Grande co-wrote and produced the track with her go-to collaborators: Max Martin, the Scandinavian overlord of pop hooks, and his fellow Swede Ilya Salmanzadeh. Ariana Grande is not the first to wander through the dandelion patch in search of inspiration. The Rolling Stones gave us "Dandelion" in 1967, all harpsichords and hippie mysticism. Ruth B offered a more recent take in 2017 with "Dandelions," a wistful tune about love, innocence, and the hope that your crush likes you back.
