Megan Moroney wrote "You Had To Be There" as a Christmas gift for Kenny Chesney in December 2024. The song reflects her personal journey from attending Chesney's concert in Atlanta in 2018 as a fan to touring with him as an opening act on his 2024 Sun Goes Down Tour. Chesney is not just the inspiration for the song, he also sings on it. That's him in the second verse offering sage advice and reflecting on the passage of time. Moroney wrote the song alongside Mackenzie Carpenter, Micah Carpenter, and Ben Williams during a writer's retreat in Panama City, Florida, on December 19, 2024. The same three also worked on her singles "I'm Not Pretty," "28th Of June" and "Indifferent." Initially nervous about presenting the song to Chesney, Moroney mustered the courage to share it during a trip to the US Virgin Islands just after the New Year. "I was planning on showing it to him, like, before we went to dinner, all of us. Once we got there, he's like, 'You're being so weird,'" Moroney recalled to Taste of Country Nights. "I was like, 'Umm, I wrote you a song, here ya go!'" Chesney was touched by the gesture, noting it was the first time someone had written a song for him, and he agreed to collaborate on the track. The song traces Moroney's evolution from fan to star. In 2018, she was just another teenager in a new pair of cowboy boots at a Chesney show in Atlanta, sneaking kisses under the stage lights. Fast-forward six years, and she's opening for him on a massive tour, watching thousands of faces light up from the other side of the spotlight. Moroney's regular producer Kristian Bush created the soundscape. Its blend of acoustic guitar riffs and harmonies evokes the atmosphere of a live country concert. Kristian Bush also plays the acoustic guitar on the track.
