"Punk Rocky" is the sound of A$AP Rocky standing in a room full of guitars, broken vows, and second thoughts, wondering how everything got so complicated so quickly. Over crunchy, rock-leaning instrumentation, Rocky sings from the perspective of a man trapped in a crumbling marriage. This is likely character work rather than a TMZ-coded confession about his real-life relationship with his spouse, Rihanna. As the lead single from Rocky's fourth album, Don't Be Dumb, the track leans heavily into the project's title philosophy. The repeated refrain "Don't be dumb" doubles as a warning label both for Rocky and others navigating failed relationships. Rocky co-wrote "Punk Rocky" with Ging (Adam King Feeney), Zach Fogarty, and Cristoforo Donadi (aka Ghost), with all four sharing production credits. The song's melodic, rock-influenced sound departs from Rocky's usual hip-hop framework. Feeney, formerly known as Frank Dukes, brings serious musical mileage to the table. Before reinventing himself under the Ging moniker for more experimental, art-driven projects, he racked up major credits across hip-hop and pop, including Drake's "0 to 100/ The Catch Up," Camila Cabello's "Havana," Post Malone's "Circles" and The Weeknd's "Alone Again." Fogarty and Donadi fit Rocky's habit of favoring deeply embedded studio craftsmen over obvious headline producers, musicians who live in the liner notes and thrive on texture rather than spotlight. Donadi also lends his voice to the song's opening refrain, setting the bruised, theatrical tone. The surreal music video - co-directed by Rocky with Folkert Verdoorn and Simon Becks - leans fully into controlled chaos. It opens with Rocky and a garage punk band rehearsing before things unravel in spectacular fashion. The cast is stacked: Winona Ryder, Danny Elfman, Thundercat, and Rocky's cousin A$AP Nast all make appearances. Both Elfman and Ryder are frequent collaborators of director Tim Burton, who created the album's cover art. Don't Be Dumb is Rocky's first full-length release in nearly eight years, following 2018's Testing, and it behaves like an artist with a lot to say and no interest in saying it the same way twice. Across 15 tracks, the album jumps between jazz, hip-hop, metal, indie, and R&B, with each song capturing a distinct mood or persona. Burton's cover art visualizes six of those personas, five of which come to life in the "Punk Rocky" video. A$AP Rocky performed "Punk Rocky" live for the first time during his debut appearance on Saturday Night Live on January 17, 2026. After years of persistently reaching out, A$AP Rocky finally visited Tim Burton in Malibu and played him an early version of the album. While there, he noticed a drawing on the table and asked about it. Burton explained that every morning he starts a sketch and his daughter completes or revises it as part of a daily bonding ritual. Rocky recognized its power, asked to use it on the spot, and that collaborative father-daughter drawing became the album cover. Don't Be Dumb debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart. It was A$AP Rocky's third chart-topping album and first in more than a decade, following Long. Live. ASAP in January 2013 and At. Long. Last. ASAP in June 2015.
