"What You Need" is an introspective breakup song where Tems tells someone who loves her that staying would only hurt them. Tems suggested the song grew out of real-life romantic fallout, though she avoided pinning it to any specific ex. When Radio 1Xtra asked about the song, she laughed and said with "What You Need" she's "getting over a breakup," tying the track directly to that emotional period rather than treating it as a purely fictional story. GuiltyBeatz's stripped-back R&B production leaves generous open space for Tems' voice to wander and reflect. The track extends her relationship with the Ghanaian producer, a frequent collaborator who helps craft the airy, percussive sound she's known for.
