"Wish I Didn't" plays like a friendly warning to a love interest delivered with a smile that knows better. It's a country-pop postcard from Megan Moroney to anyone bold enough to underestimate her. While "Tennessee Orange" was about falling despite the odds and "I'm Not Pretty" reveled in self-aware defiance, "Wish I Didn't" sits right in the overlap: attraction with a hard hat on. Moroney opens by calmly inventorying danger. She acknowledges the subject's reputation - his "graveyard of girls" - then proceeds anyway. The tension between curiosity and caution drives the track, but here Moroney is firmly in the driver's seat. That perspective comes straight from real life. As Moroney explained on Apple Music's Zane Lowe Show, the song grew out of a candid conversation with a guy who was already waving red flags. She gave him a heads-up: date a songwriter, and there will be songs. Consider this track the musical equivalent of a waiver form signed in advance. Written by Moroney with Emily Weisband, Hillary Lindsey, and Luke Laird, "Wish I Didn't" is knowingly meta. Moroney joked that the fear of becoming a lyric is probably one of the top three thoughts guys have when dating her. That wink distinguishes the song from straight confessionals like "No Caller ID"; instead, it deconstructs the power dynamic of a public-facing romance where the pen can be mightier than the memory. Kristian Bush's production keeps the sound bright and kinetic, with layered vocals, chiming guitars, and a pulse that suggests momentum rather than regret. The music video, directed by Lauren Dunn and starring actor Dylan Efron (brother of Zac Efron and known from The Traitors and Dancing With the Stars), functions as an homage to the 2005 Brad Pitt–Angelina Jolie film Mr. & Mrs. Smith. It complements the song's flirt-with-danger energy. Moroney doesn't name names, though some of the lyrics provoked chatter that the song is about fellow country singer Riley Green. The documented history between Moroney and Green includes their November 2024 onstage duet at Audacy's Stars and Strings concert, followed by January 2025 vacation photos from Saint Barthélemy where both posted images featuring matching Rolex watches. Both artists have publicly denied romantic involvement, and Moroney later said their overlap was coincidental; they were vacationing separately with their respective friend groups. Add a sunglass drop in the video during that "make it rain" line (some fans connect the drop to a viral photo of Green in reflective shades that appeared to show Moroney in the lenses) and you've got several possible winks. Whether or not the theories stick, Moroney said the guy in question is "long gone."
