On "Good Reason" Gracie Abrams explores one of the most frustrating kinds of breakups: the one where nobody did anything wrong. She walks away from the relationship not because of betrayal, infidelity, or a spectacular argument involving flying crockery, but simply because her heart isn't in it anymore. The title captures the conflict at the heart of the song. Abrams spends the track wishing she had a concrete reason to leave, something tangible she could point to that would make her departure feel less selfish. By the end, she arrives at the uncomfortable truth that a fading love is justification enough, even when guilt refuses to leave. Throughout the verses and the bridge, Abrams revisits the moment she realizes she's loved more deeply than she's able to love in return. Rather than casting anyone as the villain, she examines the quiet dishonesty of staying in a relationship that's already run its course. It's a familiar emotional landscape for Abrams, who explored similar territory on Good Riddance tracks such as "Difficult" and "Where Do We Go Now?" Here, she returns with a little more perspective and a little less panic, accepting that heartbreak doesn't always need a culprit. Abrams recorded "Good Reason" for her third album, Daughter From Hell. Other tracks like "Broke My Heart" and "Mews" flip the script, placing Abrams on the receiving end of rejection. She told Elvis Duran that she challenged herself to write each song from "both sides of the conversation, both the protagonist and the antagonist," reflecting her experience of being both the heartbreaker and the broken-hearted. Abrams described Daughter from Hell as a more reflective record than either her previous two albums, Good Riddance and The Secret of Us. "It feels a bit less reactive in the moment," she explained to Elvis Duran. "The reflecting is happening in real time rather than being so impulsive." "Good Reason" illustrates that shift. Instead of unloading raw emotion, she becomes defensive about her choice to walk away. Abrams avoids identifying the relationship. Fans pointed to her long-term relationship with producer Blake Slatkin, which informed much of Good Riddance, or her later romance with Hayes Bradley, but Abrams left those theories in the realm of guesswork. Abrams began dating Irish actor Paul Mescal in 2024, and their relationship continued as she wrote Daughter From Hell. Speaking to Vogue, she admitted she worried that feeling secure and stable might rob her of creative fuel. Rather than looking for fresh heartbreak, Abrams dug through old emotional ground, revisiting the younger version of herself who constantly chased chaos and made decisions that still keep her awake at night. "Good Reason" is one of the clearest examples of this approach, looking back with compassion instead of replaying old arguments in real time. Gracie Abrams co-wrote "Good Reason" with Australian songwriter Sarah Aarons (Ravyn Lenae's "Love Me Not," Tame Impala's "Dracula") and her longtime producer Aaron Dessner, also known for his work with Taylor Swift and Noah Kahan. Abrams composed the earliest songs for Daughter from Hell in 2024, around the time she was recording "That's So True" for the deluxe edition of The Secret of Us. "Good Reason" emerged from that writing phase and was first teased in an Instagram story clip in March 2025.
