"Take Me Back (Leave Me There)" is a sensual, nostalgic song about knowing a relationship is over, but wanting to hold on to one perfect memory. Cody Johnson wants to go back to the exact moment when everything between them was good and stay there. The song was written by three outside writers: Nashville tunesmiths Kelly Archer (Brett Young's "Sleep Without You," Cody Johnson & Carrie Underwood's "I'm Gonna Love You") and Pete Good (Carly Pearce's "We Don't Fight Anymore," Walker Hayes'"Y'all Life") alongside Troy Cartwright, who is an established singer-songwriter in his own right. The track almost didn't make the cut. Johnson thought his Banks Of The Trinity album was completely wrapped up, but a slight release delay opened a window for a few last-minute additions. Johnson explained in Spotify's Day in the Life series they made one pass through the song with the band and he immediately liked what he heard. "I was like, 'This is cool, it's sexy, it's groovy, it's something you can still two-step to,'" he said. Johnson's longtime producer and fellow Texan Trent Willmon helped steer the track toward a slow-burning country-soul sound while retaining a Texas-country two-step rhythm. Stylistically, it sits right alongside Chris Stapleton's "You Should Probably Leave," another smooth, restrained track about post-relationship longing. But where Stapleton is tempted to reopen a messy relationship, Johnson asks to be left inside a cherished memory. Johnson dropped "Take Me Back (Leave Me There)" on May 29, 2026, as an advance track before the Banks Of The Trinity album arrived four weeks later. Though it wasn't pushed as an official radio single right out of the gate, it took off on social media. On June 4, Johnson posted an a cappella rehearsal clip to TikTok that racked up over 2.2 million views. Warner Records Nashville followed up on July 31 with another clip showing Johnson singing the song silhouetted against a sunset, which picked up another half-million views, with fans particularly responding to the repeated "Yeah, baby" at the end. The simple, unpolished videos helped turn the track into one of the biggest fan-favorite deep cuts on the album.
Turn the page from summer to fall Been a while since I knew you were waiting up for my call Tonight I'm lonely, can't sleep and I'm climbing the walls And all I want is red wine on the night stand In the afterglow of a slow dance Yeah baby Take me back And leave me there Your blue jeans hanging off of your bedroom chair Sun coming through the blinds And hands running through your hair, baby Take me back And leave me there You don't have to make promises You don't have to go and take back that goodbye that you said You can move on like a southbound Greyhound bus Just lay me down in that memory of us Take me back And leave me there Your blue jeans hanging off of your bedroom chair Sun coming through the blinds Hands running through your hair, baby Take me back And leave me there Just leave me there There where we made love After we made up Red wine on the nightstand In the afterglow of a slow dance Yeah baby Take me back And leave me there Your blue jeans hanging off of your bedroom chair Sun coming through the blinds Your hands running through your hair, baby Take me back And leave me there Just leave me there
