Soca (originally spelled “sokah”) is an upbeat and heavily percussive genre of music pioneered by Trinidadian artist Lord Shorty in the late 1960s and early 1970s with releases such as "Indrani / Calypso is Ours" and The Love Man. Its name, which stands for “the Soul of Calypso'', has led some people to wrongfully assume it consists of a fusion between said genre and Soul. In reality, this style combines the sounds of Calypso with higher tempos and South Asian influences derived from Trinidad and Tobago’s large Indian diaspora. Common instrumentation includes loud, energetic electronic drum beats, electric guitar, bass guitar and Indian instruments dholak, tabla and dhantal, with horn sections and steel drums featuring more prominently in earlier recordings.
