Emo rap is a form of Hip Hop that appeared in the early-to-mid 2010s. Emerging from a background of online underground hip hop, with roots in Cloud Rap and Trap, emo rap became distinct by its blend of various aspects of Emo music with the aforementioned genres. It is characterized by moody, melancholic production that combines the atmospheric nature of cloud rap and trap's drum programming with sampling from Alternative Rock and emo genres like Midwest Emo, Emo-Pop, and the affiliated Pop Punk. Emo rap is further distinguished by provocatively dark lyricism, sullen artist imagery, and a unique mournful, melodic form of delivery, with many artists taking influence from the emotive style of emo crooning common to 2000s Midwest emo and emo-pop. The genre commonly crosses over with Pop Rap through its catchy, melodic choruses, and with Alternative R&B and Contemporary R&B, whose soulful vocals are frequently implemented or used as an inspiration for emo rap. The rise of the style has also been connected to the wider early 2010s Emo Revival. Some emo revival-affiliated artists, like Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, went on to make emo rap as the genre began to form.
