Indietronica is a broad genre of leftfield Electronic music characterised by simpler Pop-informed melodies and a DIY approach which often incorporates vocals or live instruments. Building on the sonic eclecticism of Indie Rock, indietronica encompasses a wide range of instrumentation and techniques which became popular among independent producers working with older analogue electronics or contemporary digital instruments and editing, influenced by Synthpop, Chillout, and Electronic Dance Music while eschewing many of their club-oriented elements. Although the genre has seen its greatest popularity through vocal tracks with an Indie Pop or Alternative Dance sensibility, indietronica also covers more experimental and often instrumental approaches drawing on IDM or Glitch techniques, like Glitch Pop and its crossover with Folktronica, as well as a more textural, abstract, and often psychedelic strain which evolved alongside Post-Rock and Ambient Pop in the 1990s.
