"If You Take Away the Music Then What Has She Got"

"Camera" is Charli XCX's reflective, guitar-led pop song about creative risk, fame, and her pull toward filmmaking, framed as a more personal and less club-driven moment on her Music, Fashion, Film album. The title works on two levels: It's a reference to the camera as an instrument of performance, but also to Charli's growing fascination with filmmaking and her desire to move from in front of the lens to somewhere behind it. By 2025, Charli had begun expanding into acting, taking roles in projects including The Moment, Erupcja, 100 Nights of Hero, and Faces of Death. On "Camera," she confronts the insecurities that come with pursuing a new creative path, openly worrying that the public might cringe at a pop star suddenly announcing, "I think I'll be an actor now." This is, of course, one of the great hazards of fame: once you've become famous for doing one thing, apparently the public expects you to remain there indefinitely. "It's about being brave and daring to dive into a new creative pursuit, even if everyone nasty," Charli explained to BBC Radio 1's Jack Saunders. Charli said that after making music for so long, she sometimes wonders whether it is still as rewarding as it once was, while also feeling drawn toward other creative outlets. Film, in particular, has become an obsession, and "Camera" is her way of acknowledging the awkwardness that comes with wanting to explore it. Charli XCX wrote "Camera" with Finn Keane, who also co-produced the track alongside A. G. Cook. Cook and Charli have a long creative history, first working together in 2017 on her Number 1 Angel and Pop 2 mixtapes. Keane had been part of Charli's core team more recently, and by the time of Brat and the Music, Fashion, Film era, the two were clearly established as her main collaborators. The music video, directed by Aidan Zamiri, takes the song's film obsession and turns it into a surreal piece of cinematic chaos. French movie star Vincent Cassel plays an actor enduring an increasingly miserable day on a film set, while Charli directs an enormous camera from behind. Shot in one take and presented in black and white, the video gradually descends into self-parody, with Cassel becoming more and more exasperated before referencing his famous La Haine pose with a finger gun pointed at his head. Zamiri has directed several of Charli's other videos, including "360," "Guess," "Rock Music" and "Wink Wink," as well as the singer's mockumentary The Moment. Charli told Jack Saunders that "Camera" is about pursuing something creatively rewarding, an idea that runs throughout Music, Fashion, Film. The track serves as a lighter, sweeter counterweight to some of the darker material on the record. "I think sonically, it's on the sort of sweeter side," she explained. "There are some other songs that are a lot darker, alongside ones that sit in the middle. So I'd say it's like a nice rounding out." Charli gave "Camera" its live debut at an intimate pop-up show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn on July 10, 2026.
