"K-pop" is a team-up between Travis Scott, Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny, and Canadian singer the Weeknd. The trio serve up a bouncy trap anthem, painting a vivid portrait of opulence, wild parties, and fiery romances. Each artist spills tales of encounters with a woman entwined with their high-octane, indulgent lives. Scott takes the lead, dropping cryptic lines that flirt with wild rides behind tinted windows and chem-fueled bashes. He's living life on the razor's edge, but he calls the shots. Bad Bunny steps up, boasting in Spanish about his Miami upgrade and flights to Musha Cay, an elusive island Eden. He reminisces about past love escapades, reckless and untamed. The chorus rekindles memories of an intense romance when La Flame and The Weeknd's passion set the world on fire. They yearn for the woman's return. The Weeknd takes the baton for the third verse, spinning his signature tale of hedonistic indulgence and sensual intrigue. He paints a vivid picture of a passionate liaison intertwined with drug-laced adventures and wild revelries in the sultry South of France. The title has nothing to do with the musical genre K-pop; it refers to ketamine lollipops. The Weeknd references using the psychedelic in his verse, and the lollipop features prominently on the single's cover art. The title may also refer to The Weeknd's romantic partner in the song being Korean. Love when she'll call me, "Papi" Even though she Korean Travis Scott, The Weeknd and Bad Bunny wrote the song alongside Boi-1da, Jahaan Sweet, and BNYX. Toronto producer Boi-1da is one of Drake's in-house collaborators. Julliard-trained producer Jahaan Sweet's other credits include Eminem's "Lucky You," Post Malone's "Saint-Tropez" and Taylor Swift's "Lavender Haze." Boi-1da and Sweet also produced Scott's 2021 single "Mafia." BNYX is a member of the Philadelphia-based American producer collective Working on Dying. Boi-1da, Jahaan Sweet, and BNYX produced the song with The Weeknd's longtime collaborator, Illangelo. Their smooth yet insistent tropical groove allows the artists to smoothly flow on the beat. Scott and The Weeknd revealed the collaboration with Bad Bunny via a joint Instagram post shared on July 19, 2023. It read, "Flame Abe Benito," a reference to all three stars' names. "K-pop" was released through Cactus Jack and Epic Records as the lead single from Scott's Utopia album two days later. "K-pop" is the sixth time Scott and The Weeknd have worked together. Their previous collaborative history is: 2015 "Pray 4 Love" from Scott's album Rodeo 2016 "Wonderful" from Scott's album Birds In the Trap Sing McKnight 2018 "Wake Up" and "Skeletons" from Scott's album Astroworld 2019 "Power is Power" alongside SZA for the For the Throne: Music Inspired by the HBO Series Game of Thrones soundtrack The song also marks the third time Scott and Bad Bunny have collaborated.
