"Dog House" begins with New York singer-songwriter Julia Wolf singing about being battered, bruised, and still strong enough to take on enemies. She invokes both a "big dog" and an open invitation to "search my house," laying out the titular "dog house" conceit. The song opens with Wolf singing: When they're all searching for my body I don't know who they'll find Drake specifically selected these lines after she sent him several ideas. Wolf explained to Rolling Stone that when Drake heard this particular intro, "he immediately connected with it, saying it reflected his own life." The lyrics resonate with Drake's personal experiences, which is why he chose to build the song around her concept. Drake takes Wolf's theme and runs with it. His verses toggle between high-risk bravado - "crash out" threats and veiled allusions to enemies - and high-gloss detail, like when he invokes Hidden Hills, the ultra-exclusive Los Angeles enclave he once called home. In 2022, he sold off his entire Hidden Hills compound, including the infamous "YOLO Estate," the backdrop for a decade of extravagant parties and celebrity drop-ins, before upgrading to a $70 million mansion in Beverly Crest. The reference could double as a sly shot at Kanye West and Kim Kardashian; Kardashian is a longtime resident of the Hidden Hills neighborhood. Drake's juxtaposition of glamour and jeopardy isn't new. You could hear it way back on Take Care (2011) when "Marvin's Room" captured him lost and lonely in the middle of all that success, or on Nothing Was the Same (2013), where "Started From The Bottom" reimagined his rise as both a victory lap and a burden. Even "The Motto," with its YOLO mantra, foreshadowed the excess that made Hidden Hills both a dream house and a gilded cage. Oregan rapper Yeat takes the second and final verse, opening with what sounds like a nod to "Money Trees" by Drake's arch nemesis, Kendrick Lamar. Smash David, Bosley, and BNYX crafted the beat, blending subdued guitar riffs with trap-influenced percussion. Of the three "Dog House" producers, BNYX has by far the most established working relationship with Drake; he produced nine tracks on The OVO boss' 2023 album For All the Dogs. Julia Wolf's big break came when Drake followed her on Instagram after hearing her track "In My Room." According to Wolf, the rapper had been DJing in the back of a club when someone in the crowd asked him to play the song. He did, loved it, and reached out. Wolf, who describes herself as "never online," was jolted awake by her boyfriend Tanner shouting, "Champagne Poppy followed you!" Too stunned to type, she handed him her phone while Drake messaged her lyrics and encouragement. When Drake asked for demos, Wolf rushed to write something new, and that late-night scramble produced "Dog House," a track he called "my life." The two began texting ideas back and forth, with Drake offering the kind of advice only someone at his level can give: trust your instincts and tune out the noise.
