Rage emerged from Atlanta and SoundCloud-based artists in the early 2020s. The genre is primarily characterized by its dense synth work, typically composed of buzzing, melodic super-saw leads arranged in repetitive, overlaying chords and synth lines. Rage synth arrangements are often joined by uptempo drums with raw 808s, though the style overall is diverse in its complexity and energy. While earlier works resembled the music of Pi'erre Bourne and elements of ravey, mainstream 2010s Electronic Dance Music, rage would employ more complex, noisier arrangements, including heavier, more distorted low end as the 2020s progressed. Rage was anticipated in the work of Pierre Bourne, most audibly through his late 2010s collaborations with rapper Playboi Carti that used similarly repetitive melodies and simple, bouncy Trap drums. Later Playboi Carti collaborators, specifically his signee Ken Carson and the online/international producer collective HYPERPOP pioneered rage in late 2020, being influenced by the poppy synth work of 2010s mainstream EDM. During this period, Playboi Carti released his second studio album, Whole Lotta Red, which defined early rage trends with heavier low end and aggressive vocals. His label Opium, featuring other acts like Destroy Lonely and Homixide Gang, would continue to serve as a central hub for rage music and its aesthetics throughout the mid 2020s.
